Though few of these butterflies overwinter they fly well into autumn. Some flowers linger in an open field by my creek and I have a few still in my garden. In warmer years some may continue blooming even into early winter.
Already the leaves are turning but in the sun the day feels like summer. Each season starts slowly so one day may be like autumn and the next like summer. I sense the tilt of the earth in shorter days but sometimes time stands still.
There seems an urgency with the skippers that wasn’t there in summer. They sip more deeply and linger longer at the flowers. They must sense the threat of frost. But for now we enjoy the bright sun and the gift of this autumn bloom.
