This red eft is the juvenile phase of the eastern newt. Their bright coloration warns predators of toxins in their skin. They may live several years in this bright terrestrial form before becoming green adults living in ponds. I shot this with my camera wedged into some leaves slightly below the eft to look largely head on revealing the semblance of a shy smile.
