Mountain weather

25Aug2015
I spend quite a bit of time driving between Tennessee and North Carolina. This drive never gets old for me because it changes through the seasons, and even in a day. When I just drove over there were half a dozen storms on the hour and a half drive, punctuated by brief bursts of sun that lulled me into thinking it was clearing. As I passed Asheville and headed for Black Mountain the rain took another break. The clouds stretched literally for miles, from the foreground hills to the high peaks in the distance. The Black Mountain range has the highest peak east of the Mississippi. You need to go all the way to Colorado to find a taller mountain. With this elevation, surrounded much of the time in swirling clouds, the mountains make their own weather. Judging by how many times it changed, I would guess the mountains were having a hard time deciding what they wanted.
